User Description: Since the late 1970's the analgesic Tramadol has used for moderate to severe pain. One of the most popular in Germany, Tramadol has found renewed interest with the discovery that it acts like an opioid while also inhibiting noradrenaline reuptake and serotonin.Tramadol's is different from other opioids in that it has a different mode of action and safety profile. Tramadol is considerd an atypical centrally acting analgesic and is a synthetic analogue of codeine. Tramadol had non-opioid and opioid properties and inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine neuronal reuptake acting as an antidepressant drug. Tramadol is similar in structure to venlafaxine (an antidepressant) and may possibly exert an antidepressant effect on chronic pain for certain patients.Although generally well tolerated, nausea and vomiting are common side effects of Tramadol. Morphine and pethidine are known to cause respiratory depression but equivalent dosages of Tramadol have only rarely seen these effects. The respiratory effects of other drugs may be increased when used with large dosages of Tramadol. Mild cases of dizziness, drowsiness similar to the effects of morphine and a low incidence of cardiac depression are associated with Tramadol.Postmarketing surceillance data demonstrates Tramadol to have a low abuse potential due to dependence. The weak opioid effect is credited with the reason for this.As with many antidepressants and pain relievers the possibility exists to develop a high tolerance or abuse and dependence of the drug. Tramadol has also been known to cause urinary difficulties and should be avoided by persons with epilepsy. Persons taking medications which raise their chances for seizures should use caution when taking Tramadol.Tramadol is used as a treatment of neuropathic pain and other moderate to severe pain. The pain relief quality of Tramadol makes it stronger than codeine but less than morphine.Tramadol has been proven in studies to be effective in controlling post-operative pain and does not repeat the effect of NSAIDs but instead be combined to increase the beneficial effects of both the Tramadol and the NSAIDs. Use of the combination drug allows lower Tramadol dosage and reduces side effects. from osteoarthritis may find the combination Tramadol and NSAIDs beneficial without increasing cardiovascular complications and high blood pressure. The NSAIDs with Tramadol combination does not cause peptic ulcer disease and has been found to be beneficial in labour pain management, myocardial ischaemia, acute trauma and renal colic. One of the NSAIDs and Tramadol combinations is Ultram and is a combination of Tramadol and acetominaphen.
